The average Sky TV + Sky Sports bundle runs £75 per month once the introductory offer expires. Over a year, that’s £900 — roughly the cost of a holiday. Millions of UK households are still paying it out of habit, not necessity.
Cancelling Sky is easier than Sky wants you to believe. Here’s the full process, plus exactly how to keep watching every sport you care about — for a fraction of the cost.
Step 1: Check Your Contract End Date
Log into your Sky account and find “My Details.” Your minimum contract term and end date are listed there. If you’re inside the minimum term, you’ll pay an early exit fee — typically the remaining months’ base subscription charge. If you’re outside it, you can cancel with 31 days’ notice at no cost.
Around 40% of Sky subscribers are already outside their minimum term and don’t know it. Check before calling.
Step 2: Call and Cancel (How to Handle Retention)
Sky’s cancellation number is 0333 7591 018. Call during business hours. You’ll be transferred to a retention agent whose job is to keep you on the phone and offer you discounts. These discounts are real — sometimes 50% off for 12 months — but they’re still locking you into another contract cycle.
If you’ve already found a cheaper alternative, be firm: “I’d like to cancel, effective [date 31 days from now].” You don’t need to explain why. They’re legally required to process the request.
Step 3: Return Equipment
Sky will send a prepaid returns box for your Sky Q box and any routers if your broadband is bundled. Return everything within 30 days to avoid equipment charges (up to £100 for a Sky Q box). Don’t return the dish — it’s bolted to your house and Sky doesn’t ask for it back.
What to Replace Sky With
Once you’re Sky-free, you have real options. For sport specifically:
- Now TV Sports Pass: £34.99/month, no contract, Sky Sports channels only
- TNT Sports (Discovery+): £30.99/month, Premier League + Champions League
- BBC iPlayer + ITV Hub: Free — covers FA Cup, Euros, some boxing
- Premium live TV streaming subscription: One flat fee, all channels including Sky Sports and TNT Sports, no separate subscriptions
The last option is where most cord-cutters land after doing the math. A single premium streaming subscription that bundles all channels costs dramatically less than stacking Now TV and TNT Sports separately. MazzTV’s Standard plan is €12/month. Even at current exchange rates, that’s under £11 — less than a single Now TV day pass per week.
What About Broadband?
If your Sky broadband is bundled, cancelling TV doesn’t automatically cancel broadband. You’ll need to either move to a Sky broadband-only plan or switch providers simultaneously. BT, Virgin Media, and Hyperoptic all run switching deals in Q1 and Q2. A 50Mbps connection is plenty for streaming — you only need 25Mbps for stable 4K.
